Millennials Value Efficiency, Especially When it Comes to Job Locations

Millennials are all about efficiency. I know for sure that I am. If I can get something done all at once, please don’t make me break it up into several different steps. I just really do not see the point in this, and I feel as though this is a common way of thinking for millennials. Of course I’m not saying that we are not willing to go above and beyond to get something done; what I am saying is that if we can make life easier for ourselves, we will. We are not ones to waste unnecessary time, money, and energy. There’s a lot we want to do in our days, our weeks, our months, our years, and our lives. Why should we waste this by making our lives harder? Efficiency is key, and we know this. For instance, why would we apply to a job that’s not near our home, restaurants, friends, etc? We know that proximity is key. We want to be in centralized job locations.

Location has become a huge factor when it comes to applying for jobs. Millennials applying for jobs are no longer solely looking at the company, they are looking at the location of the offices as well. We do not want to take two trains and a bus for a two-hour commute to work. That’s legitimately a waste of time to us. We want to be able to enjoy our commute, whether that’s driving twenty minutes, sitting on one train, or walking. We want to spend less time commuting to our jobs, and more time enjoying our lives. The less time our commute is, the more time that can be spent on more important things, like happy hour – I mean networking events.

Not only is it important to apply to jobs that are within a reasonable commute of where you’re living, but it’s also important to check out what’s surrounding your office. Most jobs span the typical 9 – 5 hours, making it difficult to find time to do things such as running errands. However, if your office is in a central location near stores, you can easily run your errands during your lunch break or right after work, still making it home in time to cook or order dinner. Once again, efficiency for the win!

Working in a busy area also holds its perks in the world of socializing and networking. As a young worker, you are going to want to go out after work with colleagues, college friends, etc. either for dinner or to grab a drink. I guarantee you, you are not going to want to commute far for any of these places. I know once I’m in my car after work, I just want to go home, not go out anywhere else. This can all be avoided if there are places right by your office you can easily walk to.

Not only should we be enjoying what we do for eight hours a day, but we should also be enjoying our lives. Working in an area with things to do is just plain efficient. Why should we waste time on things such as commuting, running errands, and more when it can all just be avoided? Check out the area that a job is in before you take it, I promise you won’t regret it.
