Nobody does podcasts like millennials. Sure, they’ve been around for longer than we’ve been in our adult lives, but they are increasingly becoming a popular outlet for millions of us, more likely to earn our subscription dollars than are cable companies. They’re inherently millennial friendly – what, with the technological aspects, the ability to listen to them on the go, and the incredible variety of genres, podcasts are as popular with us as talk radio is with our parents (yeah, ours listen to NPR in the car, too).
We’ve put together a brief list of our favorite podcasts, most of which possess elements of career advice or educational elements, but we’d love to hear what you’re listening too, as well! Please tweet us @PloymintHQ to point us in the direction of podcasts you think we should know about. In the meantime, here are our top five podcasts for millennials.
- Back to Work: Hosts Merlin Mann (a writer who earned acclaim for the book 43 Folders, which also became a podcast) and Dan Benjamin (who’s been called the King of Apple talk radio) chop it up workflow style, discussing everything from reminders versus task managers, using Apple TV in the office, and more. Callers engage with the hosts to talk about office life, and some pretty fascinating and philosophical conversations develop out of topics that, on the surface, seem to be pedestrian. The show airs on Tuesdays and lasts approximately 90 minutes.
- Meditate This: Just the word “meditation” alone seems to elicit reactions from two very discernible crowds – the practicing, enthusiastic bunch and the more cynical, earthbound type. This topic is for folks in both, but also for those on the fence. The show’s slogan? “A podcast about the meaning of life*…..*: We do not know the meaning of life.” Topics like mindfulness, philosophy, art, science and other cerebral concepts in an easily digestible, millennial-skewed fashion.
- The TED Radio Hour: Produced in conjunction with NPR, this is where listeners can hear fascinating lectures and talks given by some of the world’s most dynamic thinkers in vast cross-sections, from industry to entertainment to philosophy and everything in between. Hosted by Guy Raz, a longtime correspondent and journalist, the talks vary in length, but are generally under 30 minutes long and the best part? You can listen to them for free.
- Millennial: This podcast is a no-brainer for us not only because of its title. In essence, the series is all about navigating your 20s and is hosted by Megan Tan, an accomplished millennial woman whose body of work includes award-winning photography. The episodes are uploaded onto the podcast’s Soundcloud page, and listeners are encouraged to participate in a major way by having the opportunity to pitch stories to the crew.
- Another Round with Heben & Tracy: Straight from the millennial-driven online media jungle that is Buzzfeed, this podcast does it all. It entertains, it educates, and it engages. While topics really range on everything from gender, race, sex, politics, and more, a lot of the episodes tackle issues specific to the workplace, like microagressions from coworkers, misleading job descriptions, and more.
- HRpodcasters.com If you are into recruiting or human resources this site is actually a directory of shows being produced in the HR space.
Happy listening!
